Buying Hoodia on the High Street

But the question is not “Can you buy Hoodia on the high street?” but rather “Should you?”

Hoodia is a CITES protected species, and as such has to show an audit trail of how it has been grown, harvested and manufactured. On top of this, it takes up to 4 years to grow a plant to maturity. Hoodia is not cheap. It’s not meant to be. But it is meant to be effective as an appetite supressant.

So why not buy Hoodia on the high street?
Of course you can buy Hoodia Gordonii in Holland Barrett - which is one of the leading health food stores in the UK. But like all stores, thay have costs and overheads to cover.

As a consumer, you need to know that most shops in the health food sector have a hefty wholesale to retail markup. Sometimes as much as 100%. And there’s yet another big difference between actual manufacturing costs of a product and the wholesale price…
